First step to HDB application

Hi all,

After thinking for a certain period of time, i decided to share with you all my humble experience with my HDB application. I am learning and gathering information along the way from experienced people and forums.  I am still new to all these adult stuffs but here is the first step to all those complicated documentations.

So then i shall keep the personal content of "wanna get a house together" short with A. Initially, in the year 2012 we are discussing if we should start looking at Build-To-Order(BTO) projects. Indeed, we did. However, he was AMK estate specifically. I was like "HUH?!", "I doubt HDB will implement AMK new projects. Its so cramp/crowded already.", "If there is, the price confirm super pricy", "can afford ma"?

Don know if its our luck. During that period, HDB surprisingly launched two AMK BTO projects! I was so surprised and super excited. Had to phone him while applying for the online application as he was on duty. So here it goes:

1) Research 
For me, I did tones of research about all the requirements, printed them out and filed it before they release the launch. These are the first three things that you should look into: Checking eligibility of owning a BTO flat*, Checking loan eligibility (HDB loan* / Bank loan*), Checking fee payment capability. (Note: Resale and Bto flats have different requirements - pls refer to HDB web accordingly)
Most importantly, do a financial planning check by using this calculator plan. It may not be very accurate but at least it has helped you to plan out what is your limits before deciding with a unit.

2) Online Application
Here, once HDB has launched the online application for example Dec 2012 project. Then you could prepare your documents that you needed as aforementioned for filing all the necessary details. Pls do it with your fiancee or bf while doing the online application as it need both applicants' details. It would definitely be easier and faster in anyways.

Do prepare both your payslips for 6 months (in case); if one is unemployed could just state $0 amt for income. This online application only allows you to place your bets for a queue no. First timer applicants who are applying for flat are offered higher chance of balloting and with the recent change of higher proportion of flat supply to different couples are indeed attractive.

At the end in this step, there will be a $10 nets payment to be made. Unfortunately  it will not be refund if there will be any form of cancellation or your quene no is out of the units availability range.

To add on, we applied for our HLE on the day of application. As it will takes about a week to approve. (Note: HLE loan will expired within 3-4 months) Yesh, it will probably expire when we head down for our first appointment. At the time, we wanted to do it earlier so we could estimate how much we can afford to purchase a unit that is within our capability. Its good to apply it earlier. However, you could always so do on the day of your first application with your customer officer.

3) Receive outcome of application
So at the end of the launch, HDB will ballot all applications and inform the applicants their result, otherwise you could check you application status here*. Usually at this period, you have to wait for a month counting from the last day of your launch project till they release the outcomes.


So this is it! We got it! Checked our results on my way back home from school and wanted to shout out loud in the train. I was so happy that we got a no and which is quite a good one too!!! ^^

4) Booking of Flat
After the being informed by the outcomes, successful applicants will be receiving a thick brochure of your application project. All the structure details, layout, map plan, price will be included and mailed out to your corresponding address. This will still sometime as well, mainly depends on your queue no and hdb appointment schedule. For me, it takes almost a month to reach us.

So before your appointment date, you could start looking at the HDB portal or browsing through the thick brochure to select a range of units that caught your eye. Visit HDB flats availability here* at times, to check if your ideal unit is still available.

Then, its times to select your final decision for your future. ^^
Remember, there will be an option fee payable on the date of selection. (nets/cash)
Remember to bring all necessary documents needed*!!! Check through everything before leaving your house again and again, otherwise it will delay your process.

If you had done your HLG and its approved. You could print out the documents and submit on this day. Likewise, your customer officer will evaluate your financial planning for you. Otherwise, like i have mentioned you could apply it on the actual day. However, your customer officer might not be able to evaluate your financial planning for your next appointment, which will be the first 5% downpayment.

On this day, you could request to apply for additional housing grant(AHG) through your customer officer. For this grant it could only be apply via direct with your CO and no online application. Your CO will then informed you what are the necessary documents to be submitted. Hence then, you have to wait for another 2-4 months till your AHG approved via snail mail to your correspondence address and your signing lease of appointment date.
